QUESTION: Any pearls for treating a Type 1 Diabetic who could really use EDTA to chelate lead (occupational exposure) ? He’s 6ft, 220lbs. Was planning on a 3g bag, but after 5 min of drip he went hypoglycemic, blood sugar dropping to 60. Got in at most 500mg EDTA. Had taken his usual post-prandial dose of insulin 20 minutes before and blood glucose a little higher than normal at 155 or so. He takes Novolin short acting and long acting.

ANSWER:
1. Use a base of D5W
2. Start at 500 mg EDTA per tx and ramp up
3. Give him 2 remineralization IVs before you start EDTA (ie a day or 2 prior to EDTA)
4. Have him eat before and during EDTA IV
